Sift together flour, salt, cloves, and cinnamon.
In another large bowl cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and molasses.
Fold in raisins, fruit cocktail, nuts, and vanilla.
Dissolve soda in water; add to mixture.
Add sifted ingredients and stir together.
Drop by teaspoon onto cookie sheet covered with parchment paper.
Bake at 370 degrees until lightly browned.
Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
